Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama Visakhapatnam
Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama Visakhapatnam
This Centre came into existence in the year 1938. A plot of land near the Beach in Maharanipeta was procured through the help of local friends and the Government. In 1941 Sri Kancharla Ramabrahmam built the main Ashrama building and later on his sons added another block to the same and thus supplied the main need of accommodation. When the town of Visakhapatnam was under evacuation during the period of war, the Ashrama functioned from Tanuku in west Godavary District where a residential High School was conducted. On the return of normal activities in 1946 work was again resumed in the original building at Visakhapatnam. The work grew gradually through stress and strain in the early stages.
It gained a vitality in its progress after the sojourn of Srimat Swami Virajanandaji Maharaj, the then President of Ramakrishna Math and Mission some months in 1946 and 1947. The location of the Ashrama in a salubrious spot overlooking the Bay of Bengal presenting to the view the glory of the rising Sun and the waves of the ocean harmoniously rolling in perpetual succession about a hundred yards from the Ashrama made the place particularly appealing to the President Maharaj during his stay.
With the additions and improvements made in the subsequent years, the Ashrama grew to its present shape and size.
